This could be somewhat true to the story. If Goku didn't meet Bulma until much later, he wouldn't have trained with Roshi, or got as strong.

Also, they changed the back story on the Dragon Ball's like 3 times in the cartoon. Who knows, maybe the trailer is misleading.
