Written by Adam Iglewski.

Monday 08/31/09 on an unusually cool and breezy night, my dad took Dom for his routine post-dinner walk. Typically, my dad stops whenever Dom insists due to the overwhelming heat, but tonight Dom had different intentions. Dom continued on past his usual point of return, exuberating with confidence and in higher spirits as a result of the cooler weather. He did his usual fifty or so markings on every mailbox and shrub and kicked back the blades of grass on the neighbors lawn with an irregular force... as if this night was different than any other. It was as if he had known it would be his last time to strut his self perceived dominance on Stonegate Drive North. When returning home, Dom drank his gallon of water and courageously barked at the front door window convincing himself of his vital role in protecting the Iglewski residence from passing cars and late night strollers. He always felt the need to defend and love those who cared for him most. After sleeping through an episode of Bill Mahr downstairs, my dad slowly walked him upstairs to his thrown. Upon receiving a five minute belly rub, Dom decided to call it quits and fell into what turned out to be the deepest and longest of all his slumbers.

Every morning my dad wakes up at 5am and the moment he hears NPR through the speakers, Dom abruptly awakes and sprints down the stairs never failing to skip a single step. The sounds of his nails moving across the wood floors from upstairs down to the kitchen serves as my mom's alarm as his presence can be heard loudly and clearly in the quiet household. But on the morning of 09/01/09 my mom did not get her alarm... nor a delayed snooze. Out of concern, my dad curiously went upstairs to check on the little one. Although it was dark, my dad's eyes were adjusted just enough to vaguely make out the shadow of Dom still lying in his thrown. Upon turning on the lights, he saw Dom remaining in his comfort motionless without any reaction to the illuminated room nor the sound of my dad approaching.

Dom did not want to wake up on that early Tuesday morning. That night while dreaming Dom reflected on all that he had encountered and felt that it was his time to sleep forever soundly. He knew that he had accomplished more than any other dog could ever fathom and for that it was OK to throw in the towel. Born to the cold winters of his motherland in Russia, living the American dream from coast to coast, earning his undergrad at the University of Texas and on to finishing his doctorate at Texas A&M, Dom had lived a rich and full life. It was during all those experiences and countless more that he touched the lives of so many and embraced the hearts of those who showed him love. After traveling the world and becoming a doctor, Dom took the unconventional route and decided to skip work and we go straight to retirement. Frankly, that was enough for the tired little guy and let's face it... Dom hasn't worked a day in his life. He went on to reside in the mansion of a dog house, relative to his college housing experiences, at 2465 Stonegate Drive North and it was there where he spent his last and final months on earth in complete luxury and comfort.

Dom passed away a peaceful and harmless death untainted by any terminal illness or strain, which most dogs would kill for. He will always forever be remembered as the greatest most decorated most popular, most attention-seeking most interesting most snortiest most lovable most incredible most humanely most friendliest dog... a great loss indeed!

Thanks Adam
