Sri Lanka Water Monitor, Varanus salvator salvator, a subspecies of Varanus salvator (Asian water monitor) is a regular sight in Sri Lanka, specially close to the water bodies. It can be seen even on the main roads from Muthurajawela marshes close to CMB airport to the Kandy lake at the city center of Kandy. Though awkward in movement in the land, water monitor is an excellent swimmer. Kabragagoya (Sinhala:water monitor), a large species of monitor lizard, are known to eat fish, frogs, rodents, birds, crabs, and snakes, eat turtles, young crocodiles and crocodile eggs.
