Una niña australiana, tímida y maltratada por el entorno, se hace amiga por correspondencia de un señor gordo, neoyorquino, retraído y con Asperger. Mary and Max cuenta, con alta velocidad y una voz en off de cuento infantil, las vidas de estos personajes mediante el intercambio postal. Pero ésta no es una película para niños. En Mary and Max hay enfermedades, miserias varias, alcoholismo, suicidio, soledad, depresión, psicofármacos, abandonos y crueldades. Pero también hay amistad, calidez, ternura y mucho pero mucho humor de todos los colores. Mary and Max, una pequeña joya de la animación en plastilina, moldea --con clara conciencia estilística-- su humanismo feroz y su permanente asombro por la vida y por esos sujetos que la viven y que hacen de la escritura y la amistad un refugio contra todos los males posibles.
