A scene from the Bel Canto Opera production of The Magic Flute: the Three Ladies present Tamino with a portrait of the Queen of the Night's daughter, Pamina, and he becomes besotted by her beauty (Behold this wondrous work of art). The Queen of the Night arrives and tells the Prince of her plight and her plan:

QUEEN OF THE NIGHT: Why do you cringe? My son, arise. You are courageous, noble, wise.
But listen...do you hear my desperation? The force that drew you here for my salvation.
Forbear and mark my cause for mourning:
I am bereft - my soul is dead.
My daughter, taken without warning,
while in sleep as day was dawning,
was snatched from home,
by force, abducted from her bed.
I woke up...heard her crying...
I feared that she was dying.
They gagged her and dragged her from where she was lying.
I ran and tried in vain to save her
"ah help!" she cried.
They pried my child away so that Sarastro could enslave her.
I could do naught but weep all day.
Alone and fraught, I could do naught but weep all day.
You, dear Prince, are fated to release her...
free her from his depraved intent.
And if you find you love each other...
she shall be yours, with my consent.
