Jack Whitaker and Frank Wright examine Secretariat's effort in iso-cam, with Ron Turcotte providing his opinion, plus the trophy presentation, Chic Anderson's interview with a clearly befuddled Laffit Pincay Jr, and the rest of the post-race celebration. Look for Penny Tweedy singing a small bar of "One More River" at 3:47, and her reaction to the microphone still being open.
Stay tuned for the CBS broadcast of the 1973 Kentucky Derby along with many other broadcasts from the past.

  • @3dog9ty Sham was a great horse and in most any other years he may have won the Triple Crown. He just happened to be a 3 year old the same year as one of the greatest horses of all time. Laffit Pincay was a great jockey but you can tell in his interview with Chic Anderson he knew he didn't have enough horse to compete with Secretariat.

  • Even as I rewatch these famous clips from the original race it brings a tear to my eyes again to see him run. It was a truly magical time when I remember this from the early '70s. I wish you younger folks could have seen Secretariat run because he was amazing and he was a magnificent horse.

  • Secretariat was the greatest horse of all times, just a perfect machine! The world will never see another horse like Secretariat!

  • legendary horse of all time

  • @3dog9ty Turcotte did not run Secretariat at his best that day at Old Hill Top. He was coasting and had plenty left without a whip taken to him.Secretariat had no ideal who was behind him. He went 1:52 3/5 through the 1 3/16 mile post in the Belmont and a unbelievable 1:51 3/5 in the Marlboro Cup 'Pulling Up'. both them races was not touch with the whip. How about that. Hard telling just how lightning fast this brute of a horse was and done this as a 3 yr. old still growing.

  • @3dog9ty Very well said!

  • Pincay was one of the best to ever ride a horse. He and Sham were great competitors for Big Red and probably brought out the best in Secratariat. We can always be greatful to Pincay for that.

  • What a great clip!! She called 'tails' and that's all anybody sees of him. LOL!! "He didn't pay much, did he?" Another LOL!!

  • This was the best movie! I was only one at the time but I would've been a "Big Red" groupie!!

  • i love how at 6:32 when Frank Wright says, " and tails is all they get to see of this horse anymore" so true, so true, what an amazing athlete Secretariat was...how i wish i could have seen him before his untimely death....
