Four stories from Hans Christian Andersen appear in The Daydreamer, a feature using the Animagic process that uses live action combined with stop-motion puppets. Included are "The Little Mermaid," "The Emperor's New Clothes," "Thumbelina," and "The Garden Of Paradise." Songs and dances compliment an international all-star cast of voices used for the characters. Ray Bolger, Margaret Hamilton, Burl Ives, Hayley Mills, Boris Karloff, Cyril Ritchard, Patty Duke, Terry-Thomas and Victor Borge join Ed Wynn in his second-to-last screen role. This was the last film in which fans would hear the voices of Sessue Hayakawa and Tallulah Bankhead. Director Jules Bass provided the lyrics, with Murray Law providing the music for this entertaining children's fantasy.
Hmm. So the boy dumps the Little Mermaid when she wants to come with him, but when Thumbelina wants to come with him, he says okay. Probably cause she could get him out of trouble.
No offense, I love Rankin And Bass, and this movie is beautifully made, but the main character's kind of a jerk.

I love this film and the cast is amazing, but Ray Bolger has virtually nothing to do. He sings a very few lines and dances about in the background, but his character - the Pieman, as written, feels shoehorned in and superfluous. Rankin and/or Bass must've simply wanted Bolger badly enough to concoct this glorified bit for him. Still, any opportunity to see Ray Bolger do anything onscreen is good.

Rankin Bass, keep it up. I hope I'll get this movie on DVD very soon before it's gone. A for this film.
