What did you honestly think of the art?
-
in the words of Public Enemy "FIGHT THE POWER!" Bogus art gallery owners.
-
thanks for the tip, that blog is a good read:)
-
Check out the How's My Dealing blog. 303 Gallery got a "x" for, "for falsely claiming to own copyright on work by gallery artists, and laughable attempts at intimidation."
LOL! Seriously, some of these galleries need to lighten up.

Another example of your "video art" outshining the subject of the video itself. I'm becoming a big fan, thanks to this one. The video here? GREAT! The show you were trying to shoot? Blah and forgettable. I don't see how you could possibly take grainy, blurry 72dpi shots of ANY show and make money from them, but whatever. This is not a comment on your skills but rather a comment on the silliness of the "no photos" BS that is really about Control rather than copyright issues. You rule, Kalm!

'the power of believing in one's own moral condition.' ???????????? nice apology mr. kalm! go james go!!you rule!!

haha...you really stuck it through, i get tired of people hounding me everytime i whip out a camera / video cam, but i try anyway. helps to be friends with some of the gallery owners / artists, after a while they get used to me.
-
i'm glad you are doing what you are doing. And I don't see why the artist would have a problem with you recording her work. Perhaps you could now try to get an interview with her....if she lives in NY and have her talk about your situation with the 303 gallery.
I don't understand why these people would have any kind of problems with you videoing the show.

your dedication not only to your loyal viewership, but to insightful art
criticism and the integrity of journalism itself, is a true testament to
the strength of human will and the power of believing in one's own moral
condition. our most sincere apologies for the antiquated notions of
authorship, copyright and regulation. godspeed, james kahn. i hereby dub
you the patron saint of the youtube guerilla gallery guides.

Attention: sgg211
I just called 303 Gallery, and spoke with Amy (I'll assume she's the receptionist). She stated that the "No Photo Policy" was still being enforced. So sgg211, either the administration isn't connecting, or you have nothing to do with 303 Gallery. Nice try, it was a nice letter (too nice), thanks JK
PS this may become an update on the "Kalm Report," tricky little devil.

Wouldn't this reportage be covered under the first amendment? Your right to free speech as a member of the press is being squelched by dictatorial business practices, you are a journalist, the "Kalm Report" should be the "60 Minutes" of art. What does youtube say about that since they are entering the arena of politics? You can only break a copyright if you sell the image and make a profit, thereby taking food from the artist's starving family, and umm... the poor bankrupt gallery or museum...

Ron,
I thought about the "Constitutional" aspects of this, but I felt like that would be over the top, swatting gnats with a cannon. Galleries are in a double bind here, if their artists are important (and what galleries artists aren't) then they have a cultural pertinence that transcends "commercial' interests.
jameskalm 4 years ago
. If the public has a right to access images of "important" cultural events then it does enter the realm of news and "Freedom of the Press". I'd just like to be able to go in and shoot the video, they don't have to invite me to the after opening party.

Mr Jameskalm
Thank you for your brave video. Nevertheless I have some moral reservations of the appropriation of my request. I see in your gesture some "Michael Mooresc" tendency I don't like. I also see in your attitude of breaking some gallery rules, an act of a subtle self marketing: like if you were a rebellious hero, fighting for the rights of your online listeners.
Congratulations for your first year of activities.

Martinho,
I apologize for "exploiting" your request. I don't want to expose individuals to undesired attention. However in this case I wanted to expose a situation that has stirred serious discourse among a certain segment of the local scene.
Admittedly there are elements of "self promotion", which I don't have to defend. Thanks for your viewership JK
