@steely610 The wife and I are on our third in the past two years. We initially bought a 26 footer to learn on. Paid $1500 for it. We just wanted something with sails and that could float. We then upgraded to a 31' and decided it was too small, then to a 36 foot which is about right.
Read, read and read! Research on the Net and visit lots of forums. We also came across a book titled "Inspecting the Aging Sailboat". Good source for what to look for and what to watch for.

Do you constantly have to be at the wheel or does autopilot do most of the work. Do you keep moving when you sleep or did you keep someone awake to navigate?

I don't know....I just don't know!

very nice. hey young guy, you can teach me how to sail anytime..
The autopilot does most of the driving...when it is working. The servo-pendulum wind vane also drives when needed. When all else fails, someone has to drive (unless hove-to). Normally we sail day and night. Someone is always on watch. We usually stand watches 2 or 3 hours per person, depending on how many crew we have. It takes a few days to get into the rhythm. Once everyone is settled in to the schedule, it is pure joy when conditions are fine.

What a crossing - nothing larger than 4 foot seas and flying the spinnaker in the middle of the Atlantic!

We saw larger seas than 4ft. but the camera has a way of flattening things out. All-in-all though, an idyllic voyage.
