I use this method for filling a pipe when the tobacco is ribbon cut, stringy, and/or comes from a flake.

  • That was helpful. Thanks.

You are Philip Seymour Hoffman, aren't you? Nice disguise but you looked just like this in "Pirate Radio."

  • After watching the 3-part series on Herr Frank's method, I took your instruction here. I enjoyed my pipe tremendously. Simplicity wins.

  • what about tamping as you smoke? surely you need to be careful not to 'destroy' the pocket?

  • That was very well explained. Thanks.

  • Very helpful, Eric, thanks!

  • Thanks a lot for posting this. This method really works! It stays lit longer, brings out the flavor more and it never has the gurgling fluid at the bottom of the bowl. I showed this to a friend and it worked for them too.

    Thanks Eric!

  • @EMABrad, he does mention the need for the charring light at 3:40. Also, the first light leaves the tobacco all fluffed up, so that he has to tamp and relight to get going. I would call that first lighting as the charring light.

    Happy puffin'

  • All right, so I just watched the rest of your Pipe Smoking 101 vids, and I noticed you didn't do a charring light in this one. Were you just careless this time, or does the air pocket method not require a charring light? Also, (I'll consolidate my comments) in another video, you noted that the charring light is the "proper" way to light. If you light it straight away with no charring light, what are the consequences of doing this?
