Rap died because government realized in the 90's (probably before even) that music is a direct voice to the masses, almost like media. With the upcoming of afro-centric and especially 'gangsta rap' (NWA), it got the attention of the Federal government. You can hear a lot of rappers (specifically 2pac) talk about politicians trying to stop and demonize rap music .

Skip forward a decade. All music is dominated by the big corporations in the industry. Focus on image instead of talent. A shame.
