I really do love this idea, going to try it out!

eno vprašanje, ki me bega...že dosti časa. naklikala si samostojno sukanje na podstavku? v obe smeri seveda in potem ko je to obvladala na namig v obe smeri, si se postavila ob stran, da je "butnila vate"?

@Fire1Frog Never to late to learn or re-teach... Just take it one step at a time, each step being it's own skill to master before moving on to the next.

@SiriusScientist, You can also use your own position relative to Sirius to give him a bit more information. Since he's a herding dog, he likely is "pressure sensitive." As such, gently walks into his space with no extra hand/arm/upper body movement in such a manner that gently encourages him to move his hind end. Click/treat even the tiniest weight shift of either hind leg.

i get my dog in the startposition but she is not moving her back legs, if she does it, she goes of the box

That's fantastic.... Wish I'd seen it before I got my working cocker pup - but probably not too late to learn, for both of us...

@BBTricksters I agree Perry, probably the best beginning heeling video around. . . and I have watched it so many times, I've lost count!
at what point would you replace the treats with a verbal command ?
excellent video, thank you.

@JckDupp: I add verbal command as soon as a puppy understands what to do so that I'm sure after the command they will do the excercise. I still click and reward all nice tries at that point. I fade the reward according to the dog, some need more reinforcement than others. Sometimes I still click right away and sometimes do a longer heeling line finished with a click, the dog can never tell when the reward is coming so they keep anticipating it. Longer lines deserve better reward-a game of tug:)

I'm very new to this, and have an adopted German Shepherd Dog. While he came "pre-trained" it was with a spotty history and some techniques that have left him not really enjoying training. We've worked together the last year and he's gotten much, much better, but this is something he still has trouble with.
Any suggestions on how to train step one? Sirius will step onto something but doesn't turn without removing his feet.

In the beginning, I'd click any movement of hind legs, even if he removes his front feet at the same time. Try clicking a little bit before he moves his front feet and reward more if he manages to move hind legs only. Every little movement counts! He should soon understand that he gets rewarded for hind legs only and that there's no point in moving front legs.
Happy training!
