This is part two of One World, One Dream, Free Tibet. I know that my own country is not perfect, but the Tibetans, Tibetan culture, and the Tibetan way of life are facing cultural genocide. In the schools, only the Chinese language is taught and spoken. Tibetan writing is not permitted. Tibetans are not paid as much for their work as the Chinese. Religion is still tightly reigned, and people of monastic orders are not permitted to enter any government building. The monasteries are tightly controlled, and the Monks, Lamas and Nuns must attend CCP education and propaganda classes. Religious celebrations and festivals are closely guarded by the Chinese police and Military. Prior to the Cultural Revolution, Tibet had nearly 6000 Monasteries. Many of them were small, but only a handful were left standing. It is illegal to display the Tibetan flag or to possess a photo of the Dalai Lama. When my husband visited Tibet 23 years ago, many Tibetans asked him for a photo of the Dalai Lama. While he wished he had them to give, the penalty was too great if he were caught. Tibetans staging peaceful protests are given long, harsh prison sentences, and many do not survive.
