Humphrey Lyttelton Band - Bulls Head - Barnes. Found this old mini DV tape. Filmed on 20th January, 1998
With Humph is Pete Strange (tbn), and Kathy Stobbart (sax). Further information re personnel see Part 2 in comments.
Before this session I handed Humph a copy of a 1951 "Melody Maker" with a front page picture of him being presented to Princess Elizabeth (now the Queen) at Festival Hall, London. ( I was in Egypt doing my National Service with the R.A.F. at the time being shot at by the natives for three quid a week -1951.) I was present at 100 Oxford Street in the mid 1950's when Louis Armstrong gave an after-hours session with Humph. Memorable ! Shame no camcorders in those days.
In 1998 Humph gave me permission to film this Bulls Head session on condition I wasn't going to sell it Channel Four !
NOW - More up-to-date in June, 2009. I received an e-mail via You Tube from Stephen Lyttelton who informs me that he has used this movie (also part 2) and put them on his late fathers web-site SL wants the original and more information from me. I sent some info (viaYouTube) - no e-mail addres, but no reply from him !
There is more film I have of Humph and the band, Stephen which you are welcome to. A credit mentioning the camera operator/Producer/Director would be nice.

P.S. I did pay my admission fee at the Bull Head unlike some musicians ( I could mention) who creep in purposely after the collection has been taken.

  • Pete.....you should be very proud that Humph gave you the permission to film his performance - he was a very generous man all his life. Great video.

  • Thank you 170672346 for your comment. I only wish a few more of the viewers of this video (and also part 2) would do the same.

    Regards

  • In the early 1990s I was privileged to sit in for the entire last of 2 sets at the Boar's Head. I was only supposed to play 2 tunes at the beginning of the set. I started to get off the stand, but he called me back, and I played the entire set. I even played lead on "Summertime", and sang.

Unbeknownst to me, a friend asked an audience member with a camera to take same pics. He had a print made, had Humphrey sign it to me, and sent in to me. I was blown away, and so pleased..

  • I went to see Humphrey and his band a few years ago because I thought it might be a bit of a laugh. What I wasn't expecting was to blown away by the experience but blown away is exactly what I was. To this day; it is one of the best live performances that I've witnessed and is a moment that will stay with me for a long time, if not forever.

Some people just have it, Humphrey Lyttelton was one of those people!

  • Great video of a great musician/entertainer. Thanks so much for sharing.

  • How lovely to see Kathy Stobbart
