Spring peepers are a well known night sound in the eastern United States in spring. The frogs come to ponds and streams to mate. The males climb branches and make a peep that can be heard a mile (~1.6 km) away. The official name of the frog is Pseudacris crucifer. I made this video with a hand held Kodak Easyshare 7440 camera on May 12, 2006 at 8:54 PM on the edge of the village of Morris, New York. Illumination is by a hand held flashlight.

  • Heard these many times, but never actually saw one peeping. Looks as if he's about to explode. Neat!

  • Yes - I had heard them for years too but never bothered to track them down. A neighbor said that he would take me to see them. They are incredibly loud - so loud that when in the midst of them the noise almost seems to come from inside your head - which makes them hard to locate and then they do blend in quite well. But there they were only about 300 yards from my house in the brush along a ditch on the far side of a field and I had never seen them.
