Absolutely divine!

We were thrilled to discover our brother, Calvin Hampton's Fanfares on YouTube. Alison's rendition is fantastic. It is so gratifying to know that his work is still being performed and enjoyed by so many.

Music of Calvin Hampton will be featured in a concert in New York on Friday June 5, 2009. The Empire City Men's Chorus will perform a Mendelssohn-Hampton Celebration at St. Bartholomew's Church that night. William Trafka will be featured on the famous organ at St. Barts. Should be a great evening.

The "Pipedreams" program (#0648 from July 1996) was broadcast the week of 11/27/06 for World AIDS Day.
Other great Hampton hymn tunes worth seeking out are "Richardson," "de Tar" and "Henderson." The "Repeating Alleluias" is also beautiful. To this day I cannot hear or sing his setting of the Nicene Creed without choking up.
Harry Huff, now in Boston, ought to be able to help you locate the hymns that aren't in the 1982 Hymnal as well as the other pieces.

That hymn tune is called St Helena. If you go to the Pipedreams website, archived programs, and search Calvin Hampton, you will find the program that Harry Huff put together in Calvin's memory. In addition to other things, including his amazing setting of the Nicean Creed, they perform the hymn St. Helena.

I wholeheartedly agree. We did this in a my former church's choir, and I would like to introduce it to my current church's choir director.

My favorite Hampton hymn in the Hymnal 1982 is "There's a Wideness in God's Mercy" (#469). It usually brings me to tears. I'd love it if someone could post a recording of it.

I also attended Hampton's Music at Midnight concerts in NYC and sang in his choir for the last three years of his career. His death in 1984 left a huge void in my music life. I still miss hearing him play the organ and his music; he played others' music magnificently as well, especially Bach, Franck and Messiaen. The organist here has great insight into his art and style. I heard Hampton play "Fanfares" several times and her performance is highly evocative of how he rendered the piece.

Great stuff, do you know who the organist is?

I know her, but am having a hard time getting in touch with her (11 years after the fact) to get her permission to broadcast her name. I filmed it, so I've got the right to Tube it, but I'd rather not use her name without consulting her. She's living & working in California, last time I heard.
