A national health care crisis in the United States yields this tense drama from screenwriter James Kearns and director Nick Cassavetes, who experienced a real-life dilemma with his daughter's congenital heart disease that mirrors the one in this film. Denzel Washington stars as John Q. Archibald, a factory worker facing financial hardship as a result of reduced hours in his workplace. When his young son, Michael (Daniel E. Smith), is stricken during a baseball game, John and his wife, Denise (Kimberly Elise), discover that their child is in need of an emergency heart transplant. Although the Archibalds have health insurance, they are informed by hospital administrator Rebecca Payne (Anne Heche) that their policy doesn't cover such an expensive procedure. Unable to raise the money himself, John persuades the hospital's compassionate cardiac surgeon, Dr. Raymond Turner (James Woods), to waive his lofty fee, but is still left with too much of a financial burden to bear. With no recourse but to take his son home to die, John snaps and holds the staff and patients of the hospital's emergency room hostage at gunpoint. John is soon a media hero, the focus of intense news coverage, even as police chief Gus Monroe (Ray Liotta) and hostage negotiator Frank Grimes (Robert Duvall) try to resolve the situation before it leads to bloodshed.

  • I am not gonna bury my son. My son is gonna bury me. So great. I love this movie.

  • whats the name of the black guy at 1:26 ??

  • An amazing and fair movie !!!! Denzel is a great actor !

  • Movie dropped in 2000 and it's as relevant now as it was then.

  • Being a father,I cry every time I watch this great movie. So many biblical lessons in this great movie. Should've done a lot better at the box office!!

  • The Mom / wife. I don't find her unrealistic at all... Her pain is expected and She is doing something... supporting her husband and driving home the reality of what's at stake. He has the strength and she knows it, she's telling him to do what he has to do because she knows he will... war has been declared and she's fighting! The screaming at the end: she knows she has seconds to get to him... maybe someone will hear her... that's the point.

  • So glad I'm not American. Their healthcare system is messed up!!

  • @ESSJ333 Yeah, we watched Sicko, then this one in school a couple of days ago...I'm chocked...(by the way I live in Sweden) I think it's really sad, the whole thing :/

  • Americas health insurance policy is a joke watch the film sicko by Michael moore and see how many die every year because of the stupid policy how they reject people

  • What gets me is that everyone in this movie thinks they're the good guys. Everyone in this amazing cast thinks they're doing the right thing. In a way, they're right: They're all trapped. As Samuel L. Jackson would say, they're the weak, and the system is the tyranny of evil men.

Denzel won the Oscar for "Training Day." He should have won it for this instead.
