Without knowing what you just wrote about del Toro putting those hints in the movie I thought the mandrake was her imagination giving explanation as to why her mom was fluctuating in health while pregnant.

I guess it could be a lot of things but i honestly believe Guillermo del Toro wrote the story to be real but left parts like the captain not seeing the faun for people who see things differently because there are more parts where it was real and the magic affected other people than the parts like the final scene...

Mhmm, so in other words, it was all real to her, but fake to the mortals around her.
Even if she did make it to the kingdom, the sad thing is that her body did die in the mortal realm, and she left Mercedes behind very sad.
