Long's body guards were yahoos, semi-thugs, and good ol' boy drinkin' buddies, of the Senator. None of them were trained professionals.

In that first undisciplined fusillade of fire, before Dr. Weiss even went down, it wouldn't be at all surprising if Long caught a couple of stray slugs.

As shown in the re-enactment, the fools fired on Dr. Weiss, when Long was standing behind him. Any shot, could have gone right through Dr. Weiss, and struck Long.
