@jennimpeal I seem to not be getting this..Musically Sort of 'The Emperor New Clothes' .....i know that music/ folk music is subjective............ but i think there is a serious lack of strength to tis type of really fluffy Irish Folk music...it's sort of Populist Festival toetapping ganre for those who like same.. anthow, .........Give Tommy makem / Liam Clancy any day.... and as for Luke Kelly i won't say any more.....Sorry to be a Folk Stalinist but that's just my take on same...

Saw Tommy do this song at Dublin (Ohio) Irish Fest, last Sunday. Great!
To each his own. "Folk music" is certainly subjective in its definition as well as our appreciation of it. For my part, I'm not only a sucker for a pretty song, but I'm really turned on by contemporary writers, writing from their tradition, who work the trickiest themes of their own time and place. Sand's "Lagan Side" is specific to his desire to see opposing political groups in his home city (Belfast) come together in their common humanity, a life-work theme for him.

Re: Tommy Makem, Liam Clancy, and other players of the folk revival (seen from the US pop point of view), yes, they were wonderful, and seminal to our present celtic folk players. But so many of their songs were remade republican war cries. That's part of their appeal - tribal, stirring. What Tommy's doing is writing folk anthems for peace. Peace is harder than war; forgiveness trickier than grudge. That's not fluffy.
