Gloria Coates: "Lyric Suite for Piano Trio, 'Split the Lark - and you'll find the Music'" (1996) Peter Sheppard Skaerved - violin, Neil Heyde - cello, Roderick Chadwick - piano. I. Bells in Steeples, II. An Amethyst Remembrance, III. Split the Lark - and you'll find the Music, IV. The Heart Within, V. Noon - is the Hinge of Day, VI. A wind with fingers, VII. Evening - the Tissue Door. Images are details from "The Colors" (1987) by Gloria Coates.

The subtitle, "Split the Lark - and you'll find the Music" is the title of a poem by Emily Dickenson. The titles of the various movements are taken from phrases within her poems. The violin is to be tuned down a quarter-tone and both violin and cello play quarter-tones against the piano.

  • @devilsmilesmeatnight this uses quarter tones? curious about strings from 09:03 to 09:53?

  • this is awesome! dude thanks for uploading :)

  • I've never heard another piece where the barrier between consonance and dissonance is so thin. The quarter tones make some passages extremely beautiful, confusing and mixing different emotions. Thank sou so much for posting this.

  • Wonderful piece!

  • I like it so much! Thank you for uploaded it. Ricardo, from Buenos Aires, Argentina
