  • Hi Dosedmonkey. i've got an interview next month to start my training in january to become a deck officer. ive applied to quite a few courses but so far only arranged this interview with SSTG in kent. been reading through all these comments on here and i was wondering if you knew of where i could find more info on what the day to day is like onboard? I'm not 100% won over on the idea of joining but i generally have no problem in achieving what i set out to do. do you know much of SSTG?

  • @mithras1001 Apply to multiple companies and ask them good questions, you'll know which company is good for you. Sorry for the slow reply, hope everythings going well.

  • i'm 15 years old and a girl, i would really like to work on joining when i'm older, do you have any advise for my lessons and what gcse's i need?:)

  • @MUSIIIICx3 Hello! Science, Maths and any technical courses going would be the best as these are what recruiters are looking for. I'd also try to do as many extra activities (fund raising, etc) with some leadership ability as your studies will allow.

  • @Dosedmonkey hello mate, that was a slightly slow reply haha. i went through the application process and unfortunatly got all the way through and failed the colour blindness latern test. turns out i am totally and utterly colour blind and i never noticed. but its ok, im still working as an archaeologist so everythings good. cheers.

  • @Dosedmonkey Naturally but I still do think it's very naive and rather silly to lay the blame of accidents on the crew's nationality and the Flag of the vessel.

  • @badgerattoadhall Emloyment is fairly stable for the deck department currently, which is great considering the economics of the world, engineering is booming, a new engineering training centre has just opened in the UK at Fleetwood, and from the papers looks excellent.

  • @Scubascouser You can have a good crew and flag, and then a large crew change can cause the moral of a vessel and safety to completely change, this is why if more then a 50% crew change you are required to do extra drills (under MCA at least)

  • @MUSIIIICx3 The minimum is generally science english and maths C level GCSEs, the best thing you can do is go onto careersatsea . org and contact some companies through there. Never to early to ask questions!

  • This is a brilliant career. I'm doing a foundation degree ETO course at South Shields for Holland America Line
