Warning! It is illegal in most US States to be in the possession of a wild squirrel. By law you are required to turn it over to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator!

This movie is intended for those folks that are not bound by US law and want to help out a little baby that otherwise will slowly die.

For more information on orphaned squirrels, please go to www.squirrel-rescue.com, www,rainbowwildlife.com and visit our Pets and Wildlife Forum for more support and advice at www.petsandwildlifeforum.com

  • My cat attacked a baby squirrel and left a few (non-serious) scratches and marks on his body. Luckily, we rescued the 3 week old squirrel in time and wrapped him in a towel and put him in a box with cloths and a heating pad. We fed him puppy formula out of a plastic syringe for about 4 days. But sadly, the little guy didnt make it and passed away. We are clueless at what happened to him and i was wondering if you could tell me what happened or what we did wrong?

  • @srthiers Thank you for having tried to save the little one. Unfortunately a cat's saliva has numerous bacterias that are fatal to a squirrel when entering the blood stream through a bite or scratch, some only need to be breathed in and no wounds need to occur. A wildlife rehabber would have known that the squirrel needs antibiotics within 2 hours of the attach to counteract the bacterial invasion. I'm sorry you had to go through this.

  • @MissDolittle Thankyou so much. We were not informed of what needed to be done and we did not know it had to be so urgent. We wish he could have been able to be rehabillatated and sent back into the wild where he belonged, but we failed. He brought joy to our family for the short time we had him and the news of our family nursing a baby squirrel spread quickly to our friends and created only laughter and smiles. Thankyou so much for the advice and we will act correctly next time!

  • @srthiers Thank you for caring about the little ones!!!

  • just rescued one today...fell out of a tree in a very busy area, and after two hours when mother never came, I took her home. Thank you SO MUCH for this video...if I am going to put energy into trying to save a squirrel, I want to do it right. My only question is, how do I reintroduce her to the wild, so that she may survive on his own? I feel keeping her in a box won't habituate her to independence. Should I create a mini mock forest and bury nuts for her to dig up?

  • @Azkamina Thank you for taking care of the squirrel! Besides the right nutrition and care, it is important that this little guy grows up with other squirrels. Is there any way you can get a hold of a wildlife rehabilitator?

  • Trying to save squirrels has never been successful for me, I think they are particularly fragile and I would recommend people turn them over to a professional ASAP if possible.
