My pet rat Bearzie won't take her medicine unless we do it this way. She has an inner ear infection and I (we) have to do this for 3 more weeks. So, to give medicine to a rat, you need two people, one to hold pet rat and another to administer the meds. If they get it on them, that's fine b/c they are such clean animals, they'll just lick it off themselves anyway. This is easier if you do if you wake your rat up, otherwise, if she or he is already up, this would've taken a lot longer! Hope this helps you rat lovers.

  • You're such a good parent to Bearzie. My own rat, Buboe, lost the fight against a respiratory infection, but after he died (much too young), I was able to console myself knowing that I had given him medicine, and done all I could.

  • I'm sorry about Buboe. What a cute name. I wish rats lived longer and were less prone to infection because it's so easy to get attached to them.

  • i tried that with my male rat but he just wriggled the whole time and i think most of his medication went on his face. i was holding him and my mam was trying to give him his medication. if it went on his face will he clean it off.

  • @TheJesterRace00 Thanks, not only does lil ratty get the medicine but a little treat too! I wondered if there would be any problem with the rats metabolising it but I can't see why there would be, and my vet didn't foresee any problems :)

  • What I found to work was soaking the medicine on to a piece of bread and feeding that to the sick rat, my little guy took it every time and made a full recovery!
