  • when i started my s14 my friend thought i got diesel in it lol i have the same problem but..when i start the engine it sounds just like this but when i rise rpm it wont stop it will still rattle. but as soon as i put load on engine (start moving) this sound is gone. is it vct too? thank you

  • Could be your bottom end bearings are shot.. not good. I'd get a trusted mechanic to look over it. I say trusted because there are a few around that will lie to take your money

  • Yeah replaced the whole sprocket. That in itself was only $130 (au) and my engine was apart so it was a good time to throw it on

  • do you know if the s14 sr20det is a straight drop in in the s14? we have here (canada or the states came with a ka24de)

  • I'm not sure man.. I presume it would be a straight swap, if not, pretty easy to make it fit?

  • If the noise goes away with increasing RPM's it's a bad hydraulic valve lifter. Rod knock (due to a bad rod bearing) won't go away with increasing RPM's like the car in the video does. So this is a sure sign of a bad hydraulic valve lifter. This has nothing to do with the VTC, any SR20DET motor can develop this problem... S13, S14, or S15.

  • That noise isn't related to the VTC or rod bearings.

The sound is due to a bad hydraulic valve 'lifter'... it's a fairly common problem for high-mileage Nissan SR20DE(T) and VG30DE(TT) motors. If the engine/cylinder head is laid side-ways or upside down the oil drains out of the lifters and it's practically impossible to bleed the air out of them.

But the good news is noisy lifter(s) aren't really a mechanical threat to the motor... if you can live with the noise, the motor will do just fine.

  • @elias799 straight swap. just have to rig the harness up.

  • I've got this. I was told by tuner to not worry about it till it does completely, but goddam I hate hearing that. I keep checking oil level and pressure etc cause it sounds WRONG :)

  • @elias799

it is a straight swap and i know this because im doing mine as we speak :)

easy swap, a little wiring involved but no biggie

  • I know what VTC's are, but what's a VCT?

  • It sounds to me like timing chain rattle, pull the valve cover and see if the upper chain guide or valve cover is warn. I dont dought it could be the VTC but id try free simple fixes first ti eliminate possible problems

  • same with my engine....pls tell me what is the conclusion on your engine?

  • 200sxpew I'm interested in your vct intake sprocket....my s14 Sr is rattling need to replace it asap

  • i have a used a variable valve timing actuator spare. it works fine, i got a new one as it was given to me free, the old one doesn't make any rattles. make me an offer if you want to.
