This is not from a ballet. It is a specialty piece, choreographed bh\y Leonid Jacobson, a tribute to the great 18th century dancer Auguste Vestris, known for athleticism and pantomime.

He seriously is pure perfection. He raised the standard for 100 generations to come.

It's too bad that so many of these clips of Baryshnikov doing incredible routines are of such poor picture quality.

Is there a story behind this? I love it, but I don't know anything about it

Along with his ballet training, he has developed into a very high level actor. He doesn't need to say a word, you can understand what he is saying.
What year was this?? Thank you so much for the video!!!!

@anna17miami I just like to watch him leap, conquer the space on the floor. I don't really need the other stuff. I'm not that much into dance though.

i wasn't saying it's easier and should therefore not be considered a sport...it's much harder, in many ways. being a dancer myself, i know...I was just saying that there is a certain amount of debate as to the classification of ballet, because many think it should be considered purely a performing art, some think it should be called a sport, and just because some activity is as a hard as another set of activities does not necessarily qualify it to be in that category
