From the Board book: Carol Reiners has worked as an educator for 39 years. She completed her undergraduate work at Concordia College in Seward, Nebraska. At that time, there were two choices for majors in the college: to become a teacher or to become a minister. For women, the choice was even narrower: teaching. Thus, Reiners earned her teaching degree and came to Milwaukee, traveling from Nebraska for her in-class placement. After teaching for several years at Mount Calvary in Milwaukee, Carol Reiners returned to Nebraska to tend to her ailing parents and to teach there.

Carol came back to the Milwaukee area to teach fifth grade in a high-needs placement during the time of forced busing. She briefly left the K-12 setting to teach in the Curriculum and Instruction Department at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, earning her first Masters degree. Ms Reiners then returned to teaching in Milwaukee schools, learning to love middle school and her assignment at MPSs Jackie Robinson, a school from which she retired in 2005.

Throughout her time at Robinson, Carol Reiners participated as a debate and forensics coach. She was active in district-level reading and science committees and often served on writing anchor teams during the years of MPSs Performance Assessment system. Although Carol Reiners has formally retired from MPS, she continues to serve the MPS community in a variety of ways. Carol is a volunteer at Hopkins Street School, where she supervises student teachers, and works with language arts teachers from across the district, sharing her knowledge and experience.

Carol Reiners is the heart of the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Speech Contest. She coordinates the involvement of community personnel, including educators, sports figures, public officials, and church leaders. The volunteer judges often comment, Im doing this for Carol; I cant refuse when she asks me to help students and schools. Carol Reiners own education has not stopped. She is currently finishing another Masters degree, this one from Alverno College. After nearly forty years in education, Carol Reiners continues to strive to learn more and to share that learning with students and staff members of the Milwaukee Public Schools. Carol Reiners embodies all of the professional and personal qualities that make educators from MPS truly outstanding.
