@sparten771 Because your enemy, if they win, will walk around and make sure you are dead with a spear or sword, and if your side won, then you might get executed for cowardice if you are found out.

It was far better. The shock of running into a shield, especially one with a boss, can be far worse than your average car crash. Their formations would line up, sixteen deep, and all those Romans pressing back would act like a giant shock absorber. It would be almost impossible to break a formation like that head-on, with only infantry.

Funny how half the roman army seemed to be trained to carry their heavy shields while marching but to always drop them as soon as they made contact with the enemy.
