#7 NW Folklife 2009 bishnutz on drum set with Juliana & PAVA
Many people, both in Russia and abroad, believe that Russian folk music is all alike and sounds like the famous "Kalinka" performed by matryoshka-looking women with balalaikas. However, beyond the "official" Russian "traditional" music that you can hear on Russian radio or that gets officially exported to other countries, there is an infinite ocean of genuine musical culture.

There are songs that mothers have been singing to their daughters, from generation to generation. These songs were carried through hundreds and hundreds of years, sometimes evolving, sometimes staying close to what they sounded like in those ancient days. Many songs even survived from pre-Christian times.

The goal of EthnoRussia is to protect these ancient traditional Russian songs, to share our knowledge and promote the real Russian traditional music to the rest of the world.

Juliana

Juliana is a singer and ethnomusicologist. While Russian traditional music is her main passion, she also enjoys singing songs of Bulgarian, gypsy, Norwegian, Swedish, Danish and many other cultures and is open to all kinds of vocal art. She also plays many ethnic instruments.

Juliana was born in Moscow, Russia, where she graduated as singer specializing in Russian traditional music.

In 1993 she moved to Denmark. During this period of her life she graduated as a vocalist and a teacher from Carl Nielsen Academy of Music (Odense), department of Nordic traditional music. Juliana participated in numerous projects of world music and other styles, collaborated with many musicians, has been a member of Bulgarian quintet Glas, and her main pride is PAVA - a vocal ensemble she founded and led since 2000. Their album was nominated for Danish World Awards 2005 as the World Album of the Year.

In 2005 Juliana moved to the United States where she continues her performing and teaching activities.

Juliana participated in ethnographic expeditions to the most remote parts of Russia. Her costumes, instruments, and many of her and PAVA's songs have been collected from these journeys.
