1980 Hitachi TV, fully restored by me. I didn't bother cleaning too much on the interior as I was just trying to get it functional. I was clean further later though on the inside, and possibly composite mod it, since RF is useless on it these days.

  • That is a nice little TV there.

I have a 1976 19" Hitachi. Just need to clean it up and do some adjustments on it. I should do that sometime soon. Other than that it works fine.

  • @spatsbear2 Oh for my TV, it gets even better. I found an older revision of the board used in mine.. Apparently my model was available in 78, but it's chroma decoding and CRT drivers used compactron tubes..

On my latest HBO intro video, I installed that older revision of the board. It has a more unique color quality than the newer board does.

  • @hakemon woah.... what year was that board made then? It is rare to see any television after 1975 with any tubes in it at all, sans the GE Portacolors.

If you're up to it, I'd love to see it sometime with that older board.

My '76 is all solid state.

  • @spatsbear2 The tube model board appears to have been made in 78... It's my understanding that Hitachi was trying to ditch their old inventory and decided to make it a budget 13" TV, but then when the supply depleted, went to solid state. That's what I heard, don't know if it's true. One of these days I'll snap a picture or video of it inside.. It's my main TV, so I won't get pics until it's opened up (which might be soon since I'm getting it calibrated soon).

  • @spatsbear2 In this video here however, it's using the Solid State model revision of the board, the one this TV was originally matched with in 1980..

  • We had a similar newer Hitachi like this (from 1986, likely the same chassis) in our kitchen for many years. Always put out a great picture. It actually worked better after we dropped it once screen down.... oops. Does that TV have a headphone jack in the front? Ours did, I thought it was kinda odd, wasn't a common feature back then.

  • @NJRoadfan It does indeed have an earphone jack on the front.

  • Nice TV. My main retro gaming TV is a Sharp 13" from 1989. I fould it at the dump for free. It actually has a very nice picture, but I don't have a remote. Although it works fine without one, where could I get a universal remote that would work with a TV that old?

  • I got a 1972 Hitachi 16 inch TV still all original the audio bairly works. I compensated by using my better sounding home stereo system. The channel knob is dirty due to being set on channel 3 or 4 since the late 80s to run my vcr and remote channel select but the pictture quality is very good I will upload a video of it hopefully soon.

  • Believe it or not, I found a picture of the similar TV we had... and I found the single earbud that came in the box with it!

  • Quite impressive!! Great job!
