This is e16 running upon a Pentium MMX with 32mb of ram. The base system is Debian Etch stable version. I got it working with Xvesa and Xorg, but Xvesa is a little faster. What you see on screen is wBar and Conky. The first one is a launcher bar that looks like MacOS dock. It doesn't need composite and uses only about 3mb of memory. The other one is Conky, a very lightweight system monitor which stands over the desktop. E16 is a very powerful window manager for X. It has lots of features, like transparency and some other fancy things. In this video I try to show you some of them. Take a look at www.enlightenment.org, or try EliveCD Gem, which includes e16 and e17, the new version of enlightenment. E16 is much faster and can be installed on older laptops like this one. E17 is a new build and intends to be a Desktop Manager with its own system tools. I'm going to make some other videos of e16, but for now it's enought. Sorry for the bad quality. I hope you all enjoy it!

  • Unfortunatelly this notebook dropped down in the floor and I'm really sad that I can't do some other videos with it. Now I'm testing e16 in a virtual machine, but it is not the same. Anyways... I was already prepared for the day when that old notebook would pass away.

  • Cara... vc recomenda o e16? Estou pensando em coloca-lo como padrao no meu ubuntu... o que vc acha? Quais as dificuldades que vou encontrar? Apenas usei o gnome... Obrigado e belo vídeo ;)

  • To usando o E16 no Ubuntu agora.

  • Hi, people! Thanks for posting... I'm happy you all enjoyned this video.... I would like to make one thing clear for this video:

After E16 starts up, it takes a long time before launching wBar and Conky, just because I've set it up on my initialization script!! They actually starts up in the same time if no set up is done! But as wbar gets the first background it sees when starting up, a delay was needed so it could get the real background, which appears after the E16 startup sliding windows :)

  • are you using xorg or xvesa? On a celeron 400 with a trident video card the rendering of web pages is slower than this, especially with images. I'm using openbox though, i may try e16.

  • Ahh! By the way, I'm using xvesa, of course... but Xorg also runs very well on it (a little slowly, indeed).

    Thanks for posting!

  • impressive

  • like e16, torn between that and fluxbox

  • Hi! Well, many factors contribute to the lightweight of your system. This video shows a light base system on which I've installed some light softwares in order to get the best performance I could get with this old laptop. E16 would certainly make your windowing tasks much faster (and prettyer :D) because it's really lightweight! Maybe if you try Dillo for your web browser, you can get the efficiency you want when surfing the web, but it's not very useful when you're visiting sites like Youtube..

  • Very good. It looks like you are using such an old machine to its maximum potential, and you might not need a better one.
