Perhaps that speaks more about the condition of the public at large rather than the elected officials or election system they work within.
I have noticed that many countries, like the UK and US, are evenly split in their ideas about where to go next. Europe seems to be on an upswing conservatively, with the US heading left. Both sides are quite evenly matched, the result of this being a huge power struggle. If '1st World' countries do not start watching their back their demise is eventual.
the whole point of changing the way general elections work is that you don't get stuck with choosing the lesser of two evils, like 'Tyranny of New Labour, Conservatives under Thatcher'. the first past the post just means people tend to only vote for the second biggest party in order to increase the chances of getting the biggest party out. so only conservatives can beat labour and only labour can beat conservatives. it's a broken election system.
Firstly no But why does that matter? Secondly no I don't think that's what a general election is for, but when you have a semi-presidential system a PM should be elected. And lastly exactly, tyranny of the majority or in the case of first past the post tyranny of about 30% of the population, that is not rule by the people, that is a bullshit democracy. And what if the minority actually have a better point then the majority which is often the case. Pwned
Tyranny of New Labour? Maybe you are not old enough to remember the Conservatives under Thatcher. Also, do you seriously think that this country only has a general election in order to elect a Prime Minister? Lastly, there is always the opportunity for a minority to have a voice in a democracy. That doesn't mean that the majority has to take any notice.
Oh come on first past the post is just away of the top two parties keeping the power among themselves when otherwise quite popular parties like the lib dems get side lined its just heavily waters down our democracy and leads to tyranny of the ruling party and when that ruling part happens to be new labour then your really are in trouble. Only 30 or so percent of the electorate voted for them, and the PMs not elected PM. It's the weakest democracy in the western world.
Oh come on. First past the post is the only efficient way of giving an outright winner, without the need for power bargaining between differing parties. I'm not surprised that UKIP is happy with proportional representation. Without it they would have as many MEPs as they have MPs.
LOL Mate good point:)), I guess my point was to show the UK they don't have it so bad... Yes it IS bad but not as bad as the US. If we here can not get rid of all this corruption from Wall St to Washington right down the line I am afraid we will never be able to fix it and the end of the US economy will be closing in very soon...
Only through proportional representation? What do you mean only? Only through proper democracy, will UKIP get voted in and only in first past the post system will incompetent, arrogant and completely out of touch governments be voted in, I suppose your right.
