@akrocuba martial arts were originally created for war purpose, there it means its effective in real fight, but nowdays its limited to being official sport and students are trained to avoid killing an opponent.
I dont really know how its going on in training, but martial artists also must know about humans body and its vital spots to disable enemy fast, but by the looks of today's martial arts i can say it's only choreography that looks cool.

By the way, I practice wushu (contemporary) and love it. My teacher was on the 86 US Wushu Team and trained me for 10 years like the people in this video. I consider myself lucky. I do old school wushu!
