The Orpheus Saxophone Quartet is based out of Morehead State University and consists of all juniors, under the instruction of Dr. Nathan Nabb. The members include Sara Sipes, Will Fergason, Collin Stegeman, and David Houston. The Orpheus Sax Quartet strives to play both standard and contemporary works of music at the highest possible level and constantly pushes the technical and musical boundaries of their individual playing. Performances include those at the MTNA Kentucky Competition, the North American Saxophone Alliance National and Region 7 Conference, and numerous at Morehead State University. The Orpheus Quartet will be competing in the Coleman Chamber Music Competition Finals on April 25th, 2009 in Pasadena, CA and is eagerly awaiting performing in the 15th World Saxophone Congress in Bangkok, Thailand in the summer of 2009.

Performed by the Orpheus Saxophone Quartet from Morehead State University, this is the first movement of David Maslanka's Mountain Roads for saxophone quartet. This was filmed for entry into the Fischoff and Coleman Chamber Music Competitions. Special thanks go to Jake Ratliff and Brandon Coleman for their many contributions to making the recording session a success.

Sara Sipes -soprano

  • The middle section is at the same tempo as the rest of the fast section. The bari player has downbeats on each bar and only moves during that time so it is not distracting. With the tempo, it was easier to follow but we didn't change any part of the music. Thank you for the kind comments.

  • Wow guys, that's amazing. I like how clean your runs are. The intonation is great too. Sara, you have a great sound on the soprano.

  • BRAVO! the bari runs are ridiculously clean! BRAVO BRAVO!

  • You know what annoys me about this song... the Alto part compared to everything else... i play the alto part for this in my quartet and it is ridiculously easy compared to every other part.

  • @saxmanclay Symphony 8 is gorgeous. My Wind Ensemble recorded that for a Naxos CD last year. Great writing...

  • Beautiful...dark...rich...round. Talking about that soprano tone. Lovely. :)

  • nicely done guys!

  • This is why I still believe that classical musica is not dead....

  • One of our best sax quartets at Mansfield University will be performing this suite at the Navy Band Symposium in Washington DC this coming year. This quartet did a very fine job, I thoroughly enjoyed the performance =)

  • I'm proud to say i'll be attending Morehead next fall. =D

  • The middle section sounds great. I played this last year, and I absolutely loved it.... it seems as though you did too.

On a side note, I'm playing his Alto Saxophone Concerto next year with the Symphonic Winds at Houghton College. That too, is absolutely amazing. I also suggest to get a recording of his 8th Symphony ASAP. =D
