Mike, thank god I'm NOT in any of your photos here! [Which means Mike and I didn't dump within camera range!] And, like helmets are going to save us from hypothermia???

Another Maine River race to celebrate spring is the Meduxnekeag Race in Aroostook County.

Great stills, you can really see what these people are going through. In the videos you only see the action and not the emotion. Way to go!

I guess you guys don't believe in helmets? Pretty risky without them. If the water was really 34F I think a lot of those people would have been hypothermic pretty quick too.

Kayakers are required to wear helmets for this race. As for the water temp, it varies from year to year but it is usually in the 30s range. Hypothermia hasn't really been a problem, although the occasional paddler who has been swamped multiple times may show early signs. People are usually smart enough to know when to take themselves out of the race. The rescue teams do a great job as well. Are there risks? Of course! Wouldn't be any fun without an element of risk.
