Barclay's Triumph: Star Trek Voyager

Lt. Reginald Barclay is smarter and more imaginative than almost anyone around him, but he doesn't deal well with people which results in Lt. Barclay being constantly underestimated.

Most actors could not pull this kind of acting job off convincingly, but Dwight Schultz makes it look easy.

In this episode Lt. Barclay comes up with a radical new theory to communicate through subspace using a micro worm hole to halfway across the galaxy where the starship Voyager was taken; in spite of a boss who puts down his imaginative ideas. How many of us have had such a boss?

Gene Roddenberry's vision for humanity in the Star Trek universe was that man would accomplish great things in spite of our own shortcomings and flaws (and the flaws of others). No one personifies Gene's vision better than Lt. Barclay.

-- There were aspects of Voyager that I disliked and sometimes it let me down, but these episodes were WONDERFUL and really made me love it. Barclay is such a special character and he really grounded me in this series more than I thought I would be. Given his holo-addiction and shyness, it makes perfect sense that somebody with his experiences would understand how lonely and hopeless Voyager's situation must be for those so far from home. Very special writing...

Barclay.. side character of tng, yet has more depth than the entire voyager cast combined.

voyager was so crappy and contributed to the decline of star trek, which necessitated a tragic reboot of star trek by jj abrams, now known as star "wars" trek.

Won't ever see barclay or another character like him ever again. He's not cool enough for the "cool" star trek now.

Barclay's one of my favorite characters: shy and introverted but brilliant. And he's got a big heart. This scene chokes me up a bit.

Barclay is, in my opinion, the most amazing character in all of Star Trek. No other character had to overcome what he did. And through all of his problems, throughout all of his life, he has brought hope to many and shown that 'that guy' down in engineering is significant after all.
