My father sand this as a bedtime song to help me sleep. When he was in the hospital before he was dying I sang him this song and took a final word and said Prepare to laugh. He said Keep singing. Practice on pickles. I was crying but in a good way as he said it to me and he had my hand in his hands when he passed.

whenever i'm soothing a baby i end up humming this song. a friend asked what song it was, and i hadn't a clue as ive always hummed it as a lullaby. i asked my sisters who all do the same and we remembered the line " he whistled and he sang ". our mum told us our nana would rock us to sleep every night singing that song.... she had looked after us when we were babies for two years while our parents worked nights... she couldnt believe we remembered!.. thanks for the good memories. x

Used to listen to this all the time on cassette with my grandparents. I was happy to have found it again.

I first heard this song at a girl scout camp and I just love it. We sing the melody slightly different though.
I've done nothing but listen to songs like this for the better part of the last week, ever since I saw the special on PBS. I think Tommy Makem and Luke Kelly, God rest 'em, are now my favorite singers.
It's a damn bloody shame that all four of these guys are gone. We could use good songs like this, not this "modern" crap they play on the radio these days.

This song sure makes homelessness look romantic.
