Clip a short one inch piece of wire coat hanger bend just the two ends and grind them to a point so it looks like a long staple press this make shift staple into the rubber/plastic chuck on the power drill (or use a piece of copper tape) then just lay the wires so the bare wire touches the chuck. Every rotation both wires will touch the coathanger/coppertape creating a complete circuit and add one to the pedometer or preferably just use a calculator instead. Thanks for the great tutorial!!

why not using a bike speed counter?

do you mean solder?
-
is one turn when winding the pickup a full wrap around or just half way around, so is it a 360 degree or 180 degree turn

hey it's Steve Vai!

@MrGrumpyGinger you can't use a light dimmer with a power drill, because of the way the dimmer works. it doesn't reduce voltage, it chops up the power signal into smaller or larger pieces. that works with light bulbs, but would most likely fry the drill's motor windings

You're not Macgyver by chance are you?

Upgrade to a power drill. then use a switch, something like a household light dimmer switch (speed control) ie power outlet-switch-drill
where did you buy the two pieces of plastic and the magnets for the PU?

@San5a You can buy parts and kits from stewmac, mojo music supplies and montreuxguitars.

You not just attach a piece of thin plastic to the winder so it smacks the pedometer every time it comes around. Would be far easier.

I actually tried this. Problem is, it was too hard to read the pedo when it started spinning fast.

do you do this so you dont have to keep scratching the enamel off the wire and testing it? does the scratch test harm it in some way?

Basically yes. I don't like scratch testing since you can break the wire if you aren't careful.
