"Her first appearance was a sensation, the greatest one during the present concert season !
Ada Sari at Milan's Scala !

If we could imagine all the praises that we have ever heard, such as - the sweetness of a beautiful soprano voice and a wonderful elegance and charm portrayed by the greatest coloraturas', from the young Prevosti, to Tetrazini and Gemma Bellinconi, and combine all the most notable qualities of each of them..., if we were to imagine the young Selma Kurz illuminated by all the shades of a blue sky; only then the image of Ada Sari could be clearly seen".

Those words, written by a reviewer for the Münchener Zeitung after the artist's first performance in Munich in 1924 in the best way characterise the phenomenal uniqueness of Ada Sari.

For thirty years, in virtually all the opera and concert halls throughout three continents her performances had evoked the public's enthusiasm. The critics called her "The Queen of coloratura" and "new Patti". Which in those times, was the greatest compliment that could have been paid to her.
She was born in 1886 in Wadowice near Cracow. Her real name was Jadwiga Szayer. After completing vocal studies in Vienna and Milan under prof. Antonio Rupnick, she made her debut as Margarete in "Faustus" in Teatro Nazionale, Rome (1909). After this, she was invited to perform at Naples, Milan, Trieste, Venice, Florence, Madrid, Lisbone, Petersburg, Moscow, Kiev and Warsaw.
Her repertoire consisted of thirty lyrical and coloratura arias of which the most successful were Rosine, Lucia, Gilda, Mimi, Lakmé... Invariably, she was accompanied by the most famous singers
of those times: Gigli, Battistini, Ruffo, Szaliapin, Schipa, Pertile... She sang under great conductors: Kusewicki, Serafin and Toscanini, who invited her to take a part in the gala premiere of "Magic Flute" in La Scala,Milan in 1923.

During her many tours, Ada Sari performed in nearly all of Europe's opera and concert halls and successfully sang in South America and also in North America. She often appeared at concerts together with such well-known performers as Kreisler, Backhaus, Casals.

In 1936 she began to teach and was in this field very succesful, too. Many well-known singers, without whom it would be difficult to imagine post-war opera in Poland, graduated from her class. Ada Sari died in 1968.

  • The voice is beautifully integrated from top to bottom. Her middle range is beautiful. The top notes do not sound as if they were separated from the rest of the voice. I think that she is a wonderful singer. I've never heard of her until I watched this video. Thanks for posting.

  • @altanotte

    Thank you.

There are two more Sari's records from my collection, here on my channel.

    Greetings !

  • Fantastic voice!

What's the name of the song?

  • @apnixlover900

Details in the video - at 0:13 !

Title both in Polish and original - in German.

  • What a gem! I've never heard a voice like hers before and sadly I'm afraid I never will.

  • So pleased...-

  • THIS is what coloraturas SHOULD emulate but there is NO one who can do this because they are to taught to bellow rather than sing with spontaneous ease

  • Phaidra69, you're right, BUT we also need to throw out those foolish stage directors! They think everything needs to be "modernized" and they destroy beautiful operas with their stupid 'cutting-edge" vision of what THEY want to see, not caring that these librettos DON'T translate well to modern eras AND not caring who they offend-they forget sometimes there are children in the audience, some people ARE sensitive, many don't care to have their senses assaulted by these stupid stagings. Ah well...

  • ADA SARI (29 June 1886 - 12 July 1968) was a Polish opera singer, actress, and educator. One of the leading coloratura sopranos of her generation, she possessed a large, resonant voice with a clear timbre.
