I wanted to show you how easy it is to do a full photo shoot with multiple angles and one lens in 10 minutes. As you can see I am shooting with the Nikon D3000 and 35 F/1.8. I was able to capture 4 or 5 different angles from full length to head shots to detailed shots.

I guessed my settings based off of pre visualizing my environment. I knew there was not a lot of light inside which told me I should shoot at a higher ISO like 800. I know in the D3000 that if I go higher than 800 ISO i may be compromising the quality of the image. I chose 60th of a second at 1.8 as a starting point than tweaked from there. You have to be very careful when shooting wide open at 1.8 that you do not miss your focus. As you can see in the picture with the pencil you have such a narrow focus that if you move forward or back or your subject moves you may miss your focus all together.

Start to get into the habit of pre visualizing your situation so when you walk into it you have a basis for your initial settings. Over time you will start to be able to read the light before you take the camera out of the bag.

Be sure to watch the entire video as you will see the photo shoot first followed by a screen flow where I discuss composition of each image as well as how I edited the RAW file.

  • At 6:27 your saying great foto, background blown out. Did you actually look at it? So much clutter and not at all blown out for that lens. At 1.8, that thing should have made a blur, but you've got all kinds of crap disrupting that shot. My GF's telling me your pix are not that great and I'm trying to tell her you've got good ideas, but then you post that and I got nothing to tell her.

  • @Madwand1 What you have to remember is I am looking at the back of a d3000 screen, what looks like blown out on a 3 inch screen may not look that way later in the computer. At this point I try and wait until I see the images in the computer to give my thoughts about them.

In terms of your girlfriend thinking my shots are not great, if you would like to base that off of this quick photo shoot than by all means please do so. If you want to look at my portfolios feel free to check them out.

  • I love your videos, actually learn more here than in my college classes. I noticed you use Lightroom. CS5 is used by most of the students I know. I am a mom with 4 kiddos and I have just can't decide for next semester which program to buy. I like your results with Lightroom and believe less is more. Do you always use one or both? Thanks for your videos! Fro Knows Photo! :)

  • @SeptemberLynnDesigns I use lightroom to process all of my raw files. It is designed for photographers where CS5 is more for graphic designers in my mind. The work flow and organization is easier in lightroom but both will edit the raw files the same way.

  • @ronyabdul oi eu também comprei uma Nikon d3100 18-55mm essa semana! gostei bastante dos videos desse cara.

  • Jared: I really enjoy your videos as they have been very helpful to me (even if I had taken pictures for 20 + years) My question is you were using the Nikon D3100 for this video and I see that you were using Lightroom for editing the photos have you ever used Nikon's Capture NX program? I use a Nikon D80 but am getting a second camera body and leaning more towards the D3100 instead of the 5100 because I want to use the difference and put towards better glass. Thanks again! photo_man75
