March 31, 2010: After rousting a nesting pair of Stockdoves, Jackdaws have taken up residence in a Kestrel nest box. Many birds have checked out this location: Stockdoves, Kestrels, Nuthatches, a Little Owl, and even a Barn Owl. Is this a repeat of last year's drama when Kestrels finally claimed ownership? Sadly, the male Kestrel disappeared and the female finally abandoned the nest, leaving her eggs behind.

From the website, "Very regrettably, in our country (Netherlands) the Corvid family is seen as evil rather than as the beautiful birds they are. For a short time they were protected, but a persistent lobby has managed to destroy that protection: they may again be shot and killed.

The Jackdaw is one of the most intelligent birds, if not species. They are very curious, can address challenges and even use some kind of language between them. They prefer to live in a social relationship in groups, but there is a quite some hierarchy.

Couples choose each other for life. Birds who do not nest help protect the nests and young of other daws. They do not really live in a colony, but certainly like the proximity of each other. Observing these birds makes you appreciate them."

  • I was thinking, didn't they last year take over this box by battling a pair of nesting doves and destroying their eggs?

  • Last year a pair of Jackdaws (not necessarily this pair) routed the stockdoves and destroyed their nest. The same pair was routed by the Kestrels. It will be interesting to see what happens this year. I wouldn't mind seeing the Jackdaws raise a family. They seem so enthusiastic and happy about this nest box! I do feel bad about the stockdoves...

  • Great Video,i had an Jackdaw,nice Birds..5*****

  • I don't think we have any Jackdaws in California. Perhaps not in North America.

  • oooh forgot to say i have a pair nest in my chimney every year

  • @mywildlifevideos

jackdaws are eurasian...but i have read reports of a few stragglers... making it to north east america/canada in recent years, possably hitching a ride on a ship..i think they had tried breeding in philadelphia..in towns they prefer rural areas..with old buildings which have cavities..or such as church towers.

  • Ah! I thought my memory was close, but I'd forgotten the rest of the saga. The doves, being so gentle, seem to forever lose out to the more aggressive birds.

Since they're setting up housekeeping, it would be nice to see them raise a family in peace. But this nest box seems to be a real hot spot.

  • Thank you for this video and information.

  • I can not believe the amount of sticks they seem to need to nest in...looks hazardous! LOL
