I too was there--in the 4X4 that passes you on the right, I recognize our telltale orange mattresses stuffed in the back(& we actually had a functioning AC). It would be wonderful to travel sans convoy, but sadly, things don't seem to be improving security-wise. But I too hope to return...

I was on this trip with the convoy too that day. 6 of us were stuffed into a 4x4 without air conditioning. Brutal, but definitely worth it, wasn't it. I wish the military had let us stay longer... Do you remember how it took us almost twice as long to get back to Gao because of the automotive (and digestive) breakdowns? I hope to go again, believe it or not. Such a magical place!

!4 hours of this gets you from Gao to Tessalit...with a lot of sand, rocks, dust, camels, goats and a few mud brick villages in between.
