u can pick up police sometimes on scanners and fire and ambalances railroad airport fm radio stations example 96.1 and tv

It's just that if your getting a scanner to monitor the Police, they are encrypted in Sydney and will NOT be able to monitor, but there is alot more to listen to especially in Sydney. From security, fire, ambos, air, transport, taxis, etc.

thanks for that ill go and get one

The portable one is pretty good. It can go in the car or your back pocket. That's the UBCD396T.

so is there a scanner on the market able to get around the encryption from police radio in the Sydney area and lets you 'listen in' on all the action?

@timmcdougall2 Hi, Mate...I believe you can get one of these scanners for your area! I think your area would fall under Southern Tabelands wich is still in analogue...not sure about digital though. try Dick Smith online(delivery) $999 or a local store. Hope that helps. Or look up Newcastle Pro Sound + Communication, they will post....or Prsetige Communications online.

where do you get the digital frequencies for sydney though, i also heard that the fire and ambos are going incrypted?

I don't currently have the Sydney Police frequencies, but the best way would be to scan in that area......but I do know that they are encrypted. In regards to fire and ambos going encrypted, I think that they would firstly go digital....down the track, and then maybe encrypted. I know that Monaro RFS have gone digital, but not encrypted.
