You can but must first disable the new "Advanced attachment feature" recently added to Gmail. The new feature uses Flash to upload files, which gives you the progress bar, etc. To restore the old file attachment mode, in Settings, General, select "Basic attachment features" and you'll be back to the old style file attachment demonstrated above. Hope that helps!
