I used to sniff peanut butter, the chunky kind. Took me three years of rehab to work that out.

  • I must say that I have never heard that "Jiffy" story either. The earliest jars I have seen are from 1960 when they had the kangaroo on the jar--it always read "Jif." I should think the Jiffy muffin and cake-mix manufacturer had more of a case against Jif than would Skippy for tradename copying.

  • "Jif" was introduced in 1958, and I never saw it sold under the "Jiffy" brand name--which is also the name of a value brand of baking mixes sold for 80 years. This ad may have been the very first mention of the still-current slogan "choosy mothers choose Jif."

  • This is a 1966 commercial for Jif, shortly after Procter & Gamble was forced to change its original name from "Jiffy"; Best Foods', the makers of Skippy Peanut Butter, threatened to take them to court for infringing on THEIR trademarked brand name- "too much of a soundalike", they claimed. The ad copy remained the same for years {"smell your brand...now smell JIF.."/"smells more like...TASTES more like fresh peanuts!"/"Choosy Mothers Choose Jif"}.
