Wounded man is hospitalized in critical condition
An Albuquerque police officer is on standard paid leave after shooting a man who ran from him and a Bernalillo County sheriff's deputy.
Albuquerque police spokeswoman Nadine Hamby said the incident began Wednesday when the deputy stopped at a gas station because he thought a driver looked suspicious.
Hamby said a passenger bolted from the car, and the deputy and the Albuquerque police officer gave chase.
She said the man pulled a gun and the Albuquerque officer yelled at him to drop it.
Instead, she said, the man stopped running and turned toward the officers.
She said the Albuquerque officer fired three or four times, hitting him.
Hamby said the man was hospitalized in critical condition.
His name and those of the officer and deputy have not been released.
