Dream theater are good but I prefer metallica!

It seems to an extent they worry more about making a song difficult then making it sound good, with that they tend to venture in completely different tangents in weirdly different keys and it has ruined some of their songs for me.

That's because they're a progressive metal band and not the traditional heavy metal that most people find enjoyable. Dream Theater should not be compared to Metallica at all; the two bands play in vastly different genres.

What I should have said was weirdly different keys.

How they'd playing in one key and then they'd go off in to an extreme tangent. They tend to do that a lot, and I'm not a fan of that.

And the relation between Μetallica and D.Theater? Theater is prog. Metallica is heavy-thrash. Weirdly different keys are meant to be in prog. But if you are not into Metal at all, maybe you hear it as messy notes. Its a matter of experienced ear.

I think people think their songs are complex because of the different metres or time signatures they play in. You have to take in mind though that they went to college for jazz theory. It's a natural thing to them. Also I don't see how a song could have a "weird key" unless it was atonal (a song that doesn't vitalize a key).
