I picked up "Freedom" after months of free time spent miserably online, and found it a great source of quiet and solitude. Despite its being such an adult novel, it reminded me of why I loved to escape into literature when I was a little kid. It's almost eerie hearing Franzen talk about exactly the way I felt reading his novel.

Freedom is one of my favorite books of all time and I don't think there is any other modern novel I can say that about.

He is in tune with the nuances and the absurdities of our modern world, more than any other writer I know of.

A great writer. What Dostoevsky got to the core and Tolstoy teased about, Mr. Franzen probes. It is very good lit. Very good.

After leaving FB for the reasons that Franzen eloquently states here, I feel justified and less alone. Books are for people who know inwardly that they are not mad - they just need to realise through an author how human their feelings actually are. Is Freedom a good introduction to Franzen's work? Yes, I am intrigued.

I couldn't believe how good Freedom was. After the mind blowing Corrections I had expected his next work to be lesser. But nope. It was amazing. One reviewer said of Franzen's stuff "A testament to the depths that great fiction can offer". That is so true. He is the closest thing we have to a Salinger or a Heller nowadays.

"Takes me a long time to write a novel."

The best thing an author can say.
