Behind Taliban Lines follows a disparate group of insurgents -- some are Taliban; most are members of warlord Gulbuddin Hekmatyar's Hezb-i-Islami militia. This small group of fighters represents the war's reality -- inside Afghanistan alone there are well over 150 distinct groups that are considered Taliban, or are aligned with them and/or Al Qaeda. They have different goals, but the one thing that unites them is the war against foreign occupiers. This map highlights some of the Taliban's primary leaders, their areas of operation, and which ones could be potential participants in U.S. reconciliation efforts.

In Behind Taliban Lines, FRONTLINE provides a rare glimpse into the inner workings of the growing insurgency in Afghanistan -- a first-ever film among these militants as they travel from village to village, picking up support and weapons, imposing sharia law and collecting taxes as they open up a new battlefront in Afghanistan's northern provinces.

"We have around 3,000 to 4,000 Hezb-i-Islami men in the north," a commander named Kalakub tells Quraishi."People come to us from all over Afghanistan. They come from Chechnya, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan. We get special mujahids from abroad, but we're not allowed to talk about them." Quraishi believes that these special mujahids are mainly Arabs from Yemen and Saudi Arabia trained by Al Qaeda.

Indeed, as the men of Central Group proceed toward their target, Quraishi meets a young bomb maker from Uzbekistan who says he was trained by Al Qaeda. "America started this war in Afghanistan so that European countries like England and America would be safe," he tells Quraishi. "But they should know that once the mujahideen conquer Afghanistan, we'll aim for the Middle East and Europe."

  • I am american, LET THESE PEOPLE LIVE AND BRING OUR TROOPS HOME! WE HAVE NO RIGHT TO INTRUDE ON THEIR LAND! WE ARE FORGETING ABOUT OUR OWN PEOPLE! WE HAVE PEOPLE LIVING ON THE STREETS IN OUR OWN COUNTRY WITH OUT FOOD AND SHELTER! BRING THE TROOPS HOME!

  • @SabaeanYared : The thing is, that the area that is now called "Afghanistan" was long before bloody conquered by different cultures - it was long ago part of the Persian empire, and the Buddha statures that have been demolished in a barbarian act of ignorance proofed that there has been even religious freedom, too. As result of the civil war after the Russian invasion, all of the civilisational progress was lost and the country became an easy target for Pakistani Taliban - the real Invaders!

  • just bomb that place to hell already

  • The US mission was to cripple Al Qaeda, which we did with our initial invasion. For some reason the US decided to nation build, while simultaneously invading Iraq. Now we have a debate over the US budget and how to compensate US miltary retirees....I wonder why?

  • @ArtificialRed1083 sorry but even "liberal douche hippie fags" have a right to voice their opinion. You can't pick and choose who the 1st Amendment applies to, otherwise that is fascism.

  • These terrorist earlier or later! are going to die all from an apache or ac-130!

  • For those who found this entertaining, in an ironic way, watch Dispatches: Behind Enemy Lines. Same stuff but with additional footage. Particularly funny was when the young guy is told not to drink water out of a pot, "but there's no glass." Then these guys take a bath, "even the shampoo doesn't foam up." Too too funny.

  • @charlesaferg Well, they were *both* laughing. Kinda like a Jackass movie. Besides, that kid knows that it's very important that your hair looks good before you die in jihad. And I'm not kidding! I want my hair to look good before I die too.

  • @Mrbobab : Nope - they will not even think about putting down any weapon! They [the tribes] killed each other even before the so-called "invasion" of the western alliance! Remember the "civil-war" after the soviet retreat, or as the "taliban" fought they way to Kabul! The war will go on - if the ISAF will leave the country all of the improvements (almost equal right for women, schools, infrastructure) will vanish, and the war mongers will reach again for the power!

  • what language are they speaking?

  • @dominic970 we want to establish democracy because after the Taliban took over in 1998, the people considered them rather oppressive. and us being the great and almighty USA, we had no choice but to get involved.

  • @MegaHungrybear

I do not know why you did not hear what they said correctly. Did not you see that kid who said that he will put down his weapons if the foreign troops leaved their land?
