They use multiple manufactors not for what Xenrus states above, but because they get a better price on the pieces of apparatus if there is competition between them, and they at the time liked both Seagrave and Pierces. Presently LA City has KME pumpers on order because KME came in with the lowest bid, meeting the specs.

LAFD is a huge department and one single manufacturer would not be able to keep up with the demand for new apparatus. Therefore, the LAFD purchases from several different companies.
